Perhaps you’ve seen a bumper sticker with the message “Proud to be an American”.  Someone once sent me one that read “Proud to be born in America.” I have long marveled at these bumper stickers, and wondered about the people who like them. I take words seriously.  I’ve always thought of pride as a high opinion of something you have created or contributed to, or at least joined.  We can be proud of what we have done.
