Early Learning Learning can happen before birth. Joe Hutto1 lived in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, where he got to know mule deer. Over the course of seven years, Hutto habituated them to his presence and was able to integrate himself into their society. Recognizing individuals allowed him to discern family relationships and to observe how the deer conducted their day-to-day lives. One deer who became pregnant happened to be very close to Hutto, and allowed him to follow her to where she would lie in her final weeks of her pregnancy.
